Top-level .js domain registration

IETFA announces the registration of top-level .js domain names, with an AI-based vetting process that promotes open-source projects and ensures fair ownership.

The Internet Engineering Task Force Agency (IETFA), in collaboration with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), announces the introduction of the top-level domain name (TLD) ".js", for the first time accompanied by the integration of AI technology to ensure the integrity and relevance of domain registrations.

This initiative emphasizes the promotion of open-source projects within the JavaScript ecosystem. Being internet's most popular programming language, its open-source endeavors epitomize collaboration, transparency, and community-driven innovation, aligning with the ethos of the internet's foundational principles. As such, these projects will be premiered at this start of the .js domain ecosystem.

Registration process

During a designated one-month registration window, ending at 2024-05-01T00:00:00Z, applications for .js domain registrations will be collected by IETFA. This period serves as an opportunity for individuals and organizations to submit their requests for domain ownership within the .js namespace. Following the closure of the registration window, the vetting process commences, leveraging advanced AI technology to analyze various criteria to ensure the legitimacy and credibility of prospective owners.

After the vetting process is complete, which is expected not to take more than a few months, registrations for .js domains will be available at any domain registrar.

Vetting process

The vetting procedure is designed to ensure that ownership of .js domains is entrusted to deserving entities, fostering an environment of innovation and credibility within the digital sphere. Leveraging AI algorithms, the process delves into multiple dimensions of domain ownership.

A pivotal aspect of this vetting mechanism revolves around the assessment of GitHub and other popular developer platforms and communities, which serves as a foundation for the relevance and significance of associated projects. By analyzing the activity, contributions, and engagement levels within the open source ecosystem, the vetting process can ascertain the legitimacy and impact of prospective domain owners.

Domain name age for existing projects is another important parameter in evaluating ownership eligibility. The longevity of a domain, and its content over time, serves as a testament to the commitment and continuity of its stewardship, thereby enhancing the credibility of the registration request.

In cases where the vetting process encounters complexities or uncertainties, a manual review will be undertaken by IETFA. This manual intervention ensures that nuanced considerations and contextual nuances are adequately addressed, maintaining the integrity and fairness of the domain allocation process.

In rare instances where resolution remains elusive through conventional means, a final recourse exists wherein ownership may be assigned randomly. This measure serves as a fail-safe mechanism, ensuring equitable distribution and preventing undue bias or favoritism in domain allocation.

Limitations

To manage the anticipated influx of registrations efficiently, a set of restrictions has been implemented. During the initial one-month period, each email address is limited to registering a maximum of three (3) domain names within the .js namespace to ensure equitable distribution and prevent monopolization. Additionally, to maintain system integrity and fairness, a restriction of two (2) registrations per minute from the same IP address is enforced, mitigating the risk of fraudulent or excessive registrations. These measures are essential to uphold the integrity of the registration process, ensuring that all participants have an equal opportunity to secure their desired .js domains while mitigating potential issues arising from overwhelming traffic.

Finalization of registration

Upon successful completion of the vetting process, the selected registrants will be notified via the email submitted with the registration. This notification will include vital information such as the confirmation of their domain registration and the issuance of an Auth-Code (EPP), a unique identifier crucial for domain transfer procedures. With this Auth-Code, registrants can transfer their acquired .js domain from ICANN to a domain registrar of their choice. This must be done within two weeks (14 days), after which the Auth-Code will be sent to the secondmost eligible applicant, and so on, until all applicants for the domain name have ignored or declined the ownership, in which case it will be released to the public and eligible for registration and purchase at domain registrars.

This streamlined process empowers registrants to manage their domain assets flexibly and efficiently, facilitating the seamless integration of their .js domains into their digital ventures. By providing registrants with the necessary tools and guidance, IETFA, ICANN, and IANA reaffirm their commitment to facilitating a smooth and transparent domain registration experience, empowering individuals and organizations to harness the full potential of the internet's evolving landscape.

Ending statement

IETFA is thrilled to embark on this long-awaited introduction of .js domains. This marks a significant step forward in internet innovation, fostering an altruistic ecosystem where creativity and synergy can thrive. We look forward to exploring similar opportunities with other domain names, opening new pathways for digital expression and advancement.
